Chocolate is one of the most popular foods in the world, as well as one of the most beloved. Produced from cocoa trees, it can bring instant happiness. It's a product enjoyed by virtually everyone, from children to the elderly.
You can find it in dark, milk, or hazelnut bars, or even liquid with the addition of milk and similar flavors. Used primarily as a filling for desserts, cakes, pies, and much more, it's a popular product in pastry making.
Depending on the preparation, it can take on a colour ranging from black to opaque white-yellow.
Some studies have even confirmed that frequent consumption induces habituation, that is, leads to a small form of dependence.
It's true, you can't do without chocolate.
The cacao plant originated in Mexico, where it was widely used by the ancient pre-Columbian populations who inhabited the area, such as the Olmecs and the Maya. The latter loved cultivating cacao trees, which are found primarily in the regions of Yucatan, Chiapas, and Guatemala.
The first European to observe the cocoa plant and taste the delicious beverage it produced was Christopher Columbus. The Genoese navigator began exporting cocoa to Europe, where it immediately achieved great success.
Initially, the beverage made from the plant, chocolate, was consumed primarily by aristocrats and nobles. It was exported to Spain, which held exclusive rights to this new product throughout the 500th century.
At that time, Sicily was under Spanish protection, and the Modica area was chosen as the island's chocolate production hub. After the fall of the Spanish, chocolate spread rapidly throughout the surrounding areas.
Today, Italy is one of the world's largest producers of quality chocolate. For example, Novi, a Piedmontese company and a leading producer of chocolate bars, is a prime example.
Traveling a little further south, in Umbria, we find the headquarters of Perugina. An icon of Made in Italy chocolate, it has always been Italy's leading chocolate producer and processor. The city of Perugia hosts the annual Chocolate Festival, attracting millions of visitors from around the world.
Finally, we can never forget Ferrero. The company produces the most sought-after Italian food in the world, one of our most prestigious products: Nutella. While it needs no introduction, it's a chocolate and hazelnut spread that everyone loves.
